Introduction
Data capturing just got a whole lot easier! We are thrilled to introduce a Table Sections feature, which was one of the most requested features by Youreka's customers. The Data Table gives organizations the ability to capture data in a concise way that follows their in-field experience and workflow. Do you like a 3 column layout? Table sections can save the day! Want to do some data calculations to help make informed decisions? Don't worry, table sections have it covered!
Imagine this! You are a company that specializes in completing site inspections for your customers. Your field technicians spend most of their time on-site collecting various sets of data. Currently, field technicians are answering questions, one-by-one, regarding the inspection. This means that they will have to scroll through the form to compare the data points being gathered. Not to mention that trying to build a large table using custom CSS can be a daunting task.
The data table feature will give Youreka Users the ability to input and compare all of that information in one spot without having to sacrifice time scrolling through the form, and did we mention that it’s easy to build!
Benefits
- Form users are able to save time when providing and comparing data
- Template builders can build complex spreadsheet style templates quickly and easily using drag and drop functionality
- The need to use CSS to create tables can be eliminated
- Tables will be viewable across device types
- Further customization of the forms experience based on organizational needs
- Effortless way to perform comparative data analysis
- Structured input
- Enhanced visibility
How to Setup
Before starting, make sure the Advanced Data Collection license has been added to your user profile. Please reach out to the Youreka team to gain access to this additional paid feature for further assistance.
In template builder, the Table Section will be a draggable feature. Drag that into a form and let the fun begin!
Give the section a name, decide how many columns and rows should be available, if a page break is needed, etc.
At this step, the user is also able to add custom column sizes if necessary. The custom column sizes will need to add up to 100%. For example, if there are 4 columns, 2 columns can be set to 25%, 1 column can be set to 30%, 1 column can be set to 20%!
Selecting the checkbox for "Allow Vertical Scroll" will populate more fields for the user to fill out where they can customize how many rows are shown at a time.
Once that is saved, questions and content can be added. This is where data collection and customization meet! Each cell in the table can have its own look and feel.
Publish the template and create a form to start using the table!
Use Cases
Below are just a few examples of how Table Sections can revamp your Mobile App Experience!

Best Practices
The following steps will help you consider a few things before committing to a table in the template builder!
Start here…
- Think of this as a grid layout experience… Think through the potential widths and heights before adding content and questions to the table.
- What types of data are you trying to collect? Are you trying to collect numerical data or more descriptive sets of information?
- Does each data point need its own cell?
- Do these sets of data require calculations? If so, consider the way in which they exist in the table.
- Does that need to be a clear distinction between a header/parent cell and child cells?
- Do certain data points need extra clarification/information to go along with them? Might you consider adding free text in a cell adjacent to the data input cell?
- Does your table contain images? You may have to merge cells so the image meets your design requirements.
- Are there cells that may be required in the table? Consider calling them out with a very distinct border color!
- Are the majority of your mobile users utilizing a large device like an iPad or a smaller device like an iPhone x? Keep this in mind when determining the width of your table.
- Don't hesitate to use the "Preview" feature in Template Builder to check your progress while building your table.
- When utilizing the custom column sizing feature, please be mindful of the Mobile User's device size. Setting too many columns, too small, may cause the table to be unusable on small devices.
Known Issues
- Answers are not appearing in a Table Section after reopening a form.
- On the form detail page, the background color in certain cells may not be appearing.
- On the form detail page, the adjusted cell height may not be shown properly.
- Some display issues with multi-option question types (radio buttons, checkbox, etc.)
- Cells may be merged if the table contains multiple frozen rows and columns
Considerations for Youreka’s Table Sections Feature
- In order to utilize this feature, the user profiles listed below will require the Advanced Data Collection license. Template Builder users will not need the additional license.
- Mobile
- Desktop
- Community
- If a form contains a table section, a user will NOT be able to create a PDF for that form
- Features not currently available within table sections
- Question display logic
- Attachment/photo question type
- Long Text question type
- Multi-select picklist question type
- Phone, Email and URL question type
- Barcode Scanning
- DAR
- Geolocation question type
- Tooltips
- Dependent picklists
- Linked Section support with Table Sections
- Value Range Configuration for Numerical Question Types
- A few outstanding issues around background and text color
- If a cell contains a checkbox or radio button question with a lot of options, it will increase the height of the cell.
- Please keep in mind the existing 1000 question limit and that each cell counts as 1 question.
- For pixel width information, please refer to the CSS PPI column in this article.
